Beans and Rice

Beans and Rice is designed specifically to meet both the learning and service
needs of service learners who are the core staff for three programs for
children at risk. Service-learners attend four trainings: orientation to
working in low income housing, positive behavior supports, white privilege, and
a simulation Life in the State of Poverty. Volunteers can return to become
site leaders who also receive training. At the end of each day the site leader
leads the group in onsite reflection linking their experience to the trainings
and to course material. The staff of Beans and Rice work with faculty to
facilitate making the service learning experience an integral part of the
classroom.

We work together to design programs that build community, promote social and economic justice, advance cross-cultural understanding and serve the educational and civic objectives of our Land Grant University. UACT's collaborations with communities in Massachusetts and beyond are built around both curricular and co-curricular Alternative Breaks.
